The Museum of Zoology at the University of Bergen holds the scientific zoological collections of the University of
Bergen. The collections were initiated in 1825 as a part of what then
became Bergens Museum. Founded in 1946 the University of Bergen embraced Bergens Museum including the zoological collections, the latter under the designation The Museum of Zoology. From then on the staff became involved in university teaching as well as curative work on the collections. Up until (and including) year 2000 the Museum of Zoology acted as part of the Department of Zoology, under the Faculty of Sciences. From 2001 on the Museum of Zoology is organized under Bergen Museum, a newly erected body containing the collections of humanities as well as natural history held by the University of Bergen.
The collections
While the zoological exhibits are organized by a separate department within Bergen Museum, the Museum of Zoology contains scientific collections only. The collection units, with their separate curational and technical staff are as follows:
Entomology
Invertebrates
Vertebrates
Osteology
